table of content

Let's start with the basics…

And then,

This guide is written for beginners like you to understand the most important concept of SEO - keyword research.

What is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is the process of finding keywords that can drive traffic to your business. Mostly, this is done by pointing out how your targeted users find a website similar to yours.

Let we make it easy,

When searching for a solution to any of our problems, we use a search engine like “Google” and “Duckduckgo” to find the answer.

I expect the search engine to provide us with a solution on the first search page, also known as the SERP (search engine results page).

Keyword research helps us identify those "phrases", "words", "queries", that mass requesting using a search engine.

As a business or blog, when we know what kind of questions users (mass) are asking about search engines, we can add or create new pages, help users find feedback, and use that traffic to grow our business.

Alternatively, you use the same keywords (queries) and you can launch PPC ads on the platform like Google ads or Facebook ads, driving traffic to your own or your clients' websites.

In terms of technology;

The purpose of keyword research is to find those "topics", "ideas" and provide the business value to it, which is often used by your target audience. Another way to look at keyword research is: It helps you find those questions and queries your targeted customers are asking you on the web, and gives you the opportunity to speak a language that your customer will understand.

Let's understand this by example:

For example, suppose Person wants to buy a Watch for his child. Using this query "Best boy Watch" in Google search, to find the best product type. Something like this…

Since Google search is clever, it automatically fills in with the most frequently used questions to help that person ask the right question.

Now, depending on person’s location, and his understanding, he’ll stick to his question, or maybe choose the one suggested by Google.

Now, the search engine keeps track of how often these questions are asked by millions of users worldwide.

The keyword research process reflects the most popular question, as well as the geo-location, and the number of times these questions have been asked over a period of time (eg 30 days).

Now, as a business owner, these statistics will help you understand which of these questions, which you should answer for your website, and which will help users find your website, and the solution.

The solution ultimately helps owners drive more targeted traffic from search engines, which converts them into direct sales, ad sales or as affiliate marketing.

Well, this is how a keyword research assist.

With a little preparation, you can drive significant traffic to your blog or business so make the most of your hard work.

The process of adding your search engine keyword is called "SEO Page".

That is a topic for key users, but today we will go deeply on keyword research.

Doing keyword research, has helped you to feel business while recording. Since, using data about your feelings, it can help you to increase your work.

Let's understand this by example…

Earlier I was talking about a Person who is looking to buy his son a "watch". Now, imagine that you are a business that sells Watch. (You can be anyone, and then replace the boy Watches with your product).

By using keyword research tools, we can obtain data such as what keyword “Also known as query, query, search term” that a parent uses in a search engine to find a solution.

The following result comes from a tool called “SEMrush”, which shows the same data-intensive queries as shown below:

Let's try to understand what is happening in the picture. (Even if you don't understand 100%, don't worry because this is common for beginners.)

1. Keyword: This is the question users ask to find the best kids train. When you do SEO, this is the term “target”, so we often call this “target keyword” or “Focus keyword”.

2. Volume: This tells you about how many people want that keyword in a particular month. This is a very important metrics as even if you think a search term will be popular, search data will tell you otherwise. In the example above, you can see two identical keywords that have significant differences in monthly search volume:

  • Best rated children's walk: 140 searches / month
  • Highly rated children’s walk: 30 searches / month

3. Trend: This helps you see if the keyword trend is going up (more people are searching) or going down (fewer people are searching). For example, the iPhone 11 Pro could be a popular name for 2019-2020, but with the release of the new iPhone, this name will lose value. You will understand this in more detail, as we move forward in our keyword research guide.

4. Keyword difficulty: This is an important metrics that helps you understand, how difficult or easy it is to be keyword level on Google homepage. With these tools, compare all existing standard pages for things like "On page SEO", "Backlink profile", "domain authority" and a few others, to rate those queries. The lower the position, the easier it can be to rank.

As such, there are many matrices you will get if you start with keyword research.

In short, keyword research helps you make a data-driven decision. In case you don’t know, the data is new oil.

Going forward, let's look at the benefits of resetting a keyword.

What Is The Importance Of Keyword Research?

Not all keywords are the same, and let's try to estimate this. The keyword research process can help your business (Blog, ecommerce, service or other) in the following ways:

1. Keyword research helps you understand the language used by your target audience in a search engine. We use Google search as a base, because it's a great search engine.

2. It helps you find unanswered questions, which can directly help you get paid customers from organic search like Google search, Baidu and more.

3. Involved Audience: The audience you will find is already hot (ready to buy), and you will get high engagement in the form of comments, sharing or even sales.

4. Market and customer trends: From time to time, doing keyword research will help you understand where the market and customers are headed.

5. Competitive Profit: Putting keywords and SEO ahead of competitors, will give you a solid advantage. Properly covered, it will withstand a great deal of adverse conditions.

6. Reduce PPC Expenses: Keywords SEO will help you drive those cars for free, which is a business, usually self-paid in the way of PPC. Such a standard of living can greatly reduce the cost of a digital business.

7. Extra advertising revenue: Advertisers and bloggers who rely on revenue from Google AdSense or Media.net, can use keyword research to find high-quality CPCs and thus increase their advertising revenue significantly, with the same effort.

There are so many benefits to keyword research, a few of which are the main ones.

Here is a little-known fact about keyword research:

Many people make the mistake of researching keywords as a process of finding only high-quality keywords, which is not true.

Your job as an SEO is to remove those keywords that will not help your business in any way. In addition, after you find useful keywords, you will also learn how to put them first in great benefits in the short term.

Now, I don't go into details on how to direct it, but if you want to know, you should read these two guidelines:

The good thing about keyword research skills is that, once you have used this, it keeps getting better.

Now, its time to get into Keyword research technology.

Keyword types based on user intent

Continuing with our previous example of “Baby stroller”, a parent may ask this question for a different purpose. For example:

  • A parent can ask to understand how to choose a child stroller.
  • A parent wants to know just what is the # 1 stroller for kids these days.
  • A parent is ready to buy the best children's train right away.
  • The doctor may use this question in his research.

You see, how the same question means different when it is used for a different purpose. This is what is known as the search purpose.

This brings to the fore, Keywords can be categorized into different types, depending on the purpose of the users.

These are the 4 most common types:

  • Commercial keywords
  • Transactional keywords
  • Informational Keywords
  • Navigational Keywords

These 4 types determine, which keyword will directly affect your income. This is closely related to the relevant content (TOFU, MOFU, BOFU), which is another day's reading.

The keyword can be separated by a few other ways, such as…

Number of words:

  • Short tail keywords , Head Keywords: (Ex: Best Watches)
  • Long tail keywords. (Ex: Best Watch from India)

What do you need for keyword research?

Here at my blog Shivagya World, I follow a different style of keyword research.

You need the following things by doing keyword research:

  • A tool (free or paid) for keyword research
  • List of seed Word or a list of competing domains / businesses for SEO. (More on this)
  • You use keywords to build SEO keywords or use competing websites to find profitable keywords
  • Document (advanced or similar) for photography, and keyword cleaning.
  • The final keyword transfer (Producing blog articles, eBooks, video content, product page)
  • Measurement using a keyword tracking tool.

Once you've incorporated keyword research into your business marketing process, it helps you grow physically.

I describe the keyword research steps as:

  • Research
  • Cleanup
  • Execute/Delegate
  • Monitor
  • Optimize

These 5 steps will cover all aspects of keyword research.

Now, I believe you and we are on the same page, and its time to learn how to do keyword research.

3 different ways to do keyword research:

There are various strategies you can follow to research SEO keywords. Let's take a look at some of the most popular ones once, which can even be killed by a newbie.

1. Find a competitor or top site keyword:

This is probably the easiest way to find keywords that already work on an existing website. In this process, we point to the top 2-3 websites at the top of the niche we are targeting. Example: “Best Boy Watch”

different ways to do keyword research

A quick Google search showed results from these top three websites. You can repeat the process of your keyword, and once you have found the top 3-4 winning websites, go to SEMrush, which is a key research tool.

In the SEMrush dashboard, enter the domain name you identified in Google search and use it to find keywords listed by this domain.

SEMrush will show you all the important details such as:

  • Which keyword drives the most traffic to a particular website
  • Volume, traffic%, KD, keyword position
  • Which page on the website gets traffic which keyword

SEMrush also gives you the option to filter keywords according to various features. If you need a more detailed guide on this, let me know in the comments section below

And like this, within minutes you have found a Pandora box with a keyword that is useful for your business.

2. Use Keyword Gap to get easy wins

This is one of the few keyword research methods that can help you find the keywords your competitors are typing, but they are not. This is done for an existing website to get lower yields.

3. Uses Seed Words to research keywords

This does not apply to any new and existing website alike. This is more time consuming than the two methods above, but this will help you find different keywords that are not targeted.

You can use this method by using keyword research tools or long tail keyword tools.

We will also use SEMrush to better understand this process.

  • Head over to SEMrush
  • Click on Keyword Magic Too

Enter your seed KW name and select your primary country.

Now, click on Search and within a few seconds, SEMrush will generate a ton of keywords in your seed keyword.

You can filter keywords based on various parameters such as:

  • The exact match will include the exact match of the term 'baby stroller' with the same order. So you will find 'buy baby stroller', 'buy baby stroller', 'buy baby stroller in San Francisco', etc.
  • Broad match will include all sorts of words 'buy' and 'new' and will suggest a variation of the word order. So you will get all the keywords from the exact match and '' buy a new watch, buy a new watch for boy, buy a new watch for boy in India ', etc.
  • Phrase Match
  • Related keywords

You can do the same with the Google Keyword Planner (GKP) tool, for free. The only bad thing is, Google Keyword Editing Tool is designed for PPC and is not very friendly to SEO keyword research. However, for anyone working on a tight budget, Google's keyword editing tool doesn't work.

Note: In this guide, I used SEMrush, as an example because this is my go-to for keyword research tools. However, you can always use the same tools as Keyword Finder to achieve the same.

The steps above, will help you capture a keyword. Now, once you have a piece of important data, you need to do a few things like:

  • Create the same keyword collection
  • Create an SEO program such as creating new content or product pages, website design
  • Measure it, and use it well.

I will talk about keyword combinations, and make an SEO plan in future guidelines.

In the meantime, I hope this guide has helped you to understand what keyword research is, and how you can actually do keyword research.

I understand that this is a broad topic, and you may have a few questions. Use the comment section to ask your questions related to keyword research.
